AFRICA SHIPOWNERS ASSOCIATION SET TO ENHANCE THE CAPACITY OF LAND LOCKED COUNTRIES

Thursday, 18th April 2019
H.E Nelson Ocheger held a meeting with the Secretary General of the African Shipowners Association Ms. Funmi Folorunso and discussed ways of building the capacity of African Governments and the private sector to own their own fleet so as to handle cargo.

Building on the initiatives of the just concluded African Shipowners association Annual General Meeting, the Secretary General informed the Ambassador that the organization intends to bring landlocked countries on board to participate in the blue economy and work towards the development of an African Fleet Agenda. This initiative she stated would help African governments access to financing their own fleet and hence bring down the cost of doing business and intra continental trade.

H.E informed the visiting Secretary General that Uganda being a landlocked country clearly appreciates the role played by African shipowners and freight forwarders and  expressed his gratitude towards the organisation's decision to open up a country office in Uganda and link Ugandan freight forwarders with their counterparts from ocean accessing countries.

In his concluding remarks H.E thanked the Secretary General for the initiative taken to build the capacity of land locked countries so as to enable them participate in the global maritime sector since Uganda is also blessed with many inland lakes.

As Africa prepares for the Africa Continental Free trade area developing an African fleet will play a pivotal role in the movement of goods across the continent and accessing other global markets.
