Uganda on track in Women Empowerment- Amb. Ocheger

The Republic of Uganda has, over the years, made significant strides in women empowerment, H.E Ambassador Nelson Ocheger has said. He made the remarks at a social gathering attended by Ugandan expatriates working and living in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Ambassador Ocheger pointed out that the existing conducive environment has enabled Ugandan women play impactful roles in the political, economic and social development of the country. He however, emphasized that more needs to be done to ensure gender equality.

He cautioned against misinformation and disinformation perpetuated in the social media, regarding the security situation in Uganda and the just concluded elections which he said were credible, free and fair.  

Ambassador Ocheger thanked the Ugandan community for the contributions they make towards national development through the remittances they send back home. 

The meeting was graced by the Under Secretary and Executive Director of UNAIDS, Hon. Winne Byanyima, who was visiting Nigeria on account of 2021 International Women's Day activities. She thanked Uganda High Commission for the warm reception and making it possible for her to interact with compatriots - most of who work with the UN System in the country. 

Participants appreciated the role that Hon. Byanyima played in gender-related issues in Uganda and continues to play at the global stage, including the fight against HIV/Aids.
